Blackout is a performance move, not a comfort one.
Evening light delays melatonin and shortens the biological night, right when a packed schedule is already squeezing sleep. TOP flags the rooms leaking light, at home and on the road, before lights-out.

Overnight ceiling
Under 10 lux
TOP tracks light in every room they sleep in, home and away, around the clock, and flags anything outside this band before lights-out.
What light does to a sleeping athlete.
Light is the brightness in the room, and in the evening and overnight it signals the brain to suppress melatonin, the hormone that prepares the body for sleep. The most pronounced effects are on the body clock and sleep. Exposure to light at night can result in delayed sleep onset, lighter and shorter sleep, a disrupted circadian rhythm, and daytime grogginess.
Evening and overnight light delays melatonin and shortens the biological night, so sleep starts late and runs shallow, right when an away schedule is already squeezing it. Blackout is a performance move, not a comfort one.
The research
Not our opinion. The literature.
Below 100 lux
Ordinary room light before bed already suppresses melatonin and shortens the biological night.
Gooley 2011
~25 lux
Half of melatonin is suppressed here, dimmer than normal indoor light. The most light-sensitive athletes hit that at just 6 lux.
Phillips 2019, PNAS
50-fold spread
A "dim" room is fine for one athlete and wrecking another. The band protects the whole roster.

This limit is for sleep and the wind-down before it. Daytime is the opposite: bright light supports alertness and a healthy body clock.
You control training, load and nutrition. Control the room too.
