Paint, furniture and cleaning products give off gases all night.
A freshly renovated or freshly cleaned hotel room is full of these gases, and they keep coming off long after the smell fades. They irritate the airways, make asthma worse, and get in the way of sleep. TOP flags the rooms that need airing out before bed.

What VOCs does to a sleeping athlete.
Volatile organic compounds are gases given off by paint, furniture, flooring, cleaning products and air fresheners. They build up in closed rooms long after the smell fades. The main effects are on the airways, the head and sleep. Breathing them can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, cause headaches and tiredness, make asthma worse, and lead to lighter, more broken sleep in rooms that are not aired out.
A closed bedroom holds the gases from everything in it, all night, during the exact hours that decide recovery. For an athlete with asthma the irritation comes on top of an already sensitive chest. The athlete notices a stuffy room and a dull morning and never connects the two.
The research
Not our opinion. The literature.
2–5×
Common organic pollutants run 2 to 5 times higher inside buildings than outdoors, and the bedroom is where athletes spend a third of their day.
US EPA, TEAM studies
~100 compounds
Occupied bedrooms accumulated emissions of nearly 100 distinct VOCs during sleeping hours, more than any other room in the home.
Environ. Sci. & Technology 2024
More deep sleep
Raising bedroom ventilation cut awakenings and light sleep and increased deep sleep, alongside lower overnight TVOC and CO₂.
Fan 2023, Sci Total Environ
There is no single health-based "safe" TVOC number, so the target is the level of a well-aired room: low and stable. A spike after cleaning, painting or new furniture is the signal to ventilate.
You control training, load and nutrition. Control the room too.
